Celebrate Pride Emanu-El with Rainbow Challah and Abby Stein

• by aprincipe

Today is the last day to reserve your rainbow challah, freshly baked by Temple member Eli Cohn Wein. All it takes is an $18 donation to the LGBTQ+ cause of your choice (email ecohnwein@gmail.com the receipt), which you can pick up at Temple on Friday night before Pride Shabbat at 6:15 p.m. There are only 10 left to offer!

If you’d prefer to make a rainbow challah for yourself, Eli provided the recipe in his 2020 Pride blog. You can read it here and rainbow challah instructions are at the end.

This Thursday, June 10 at 7 p.m. we invite you to attend an evening with Abby Stein. Register here to attend on Zoom.

Abby will discuss her journey from ultra-Orthodox rabbi to woman of trans experience. Stein’s Hasidic community in Williamsburg believed that, as a 10th generation of the Baal Shem Tov, she was destined to be a rabbinic leader. They also believed she was a boy. But Abby felt certain at a young age that she was a girl, and eventually orchestrated a personal exodus from ultra-Orthodox manhood to mainstream femininity—a radical choice that forced her to leave her home, her family, her way of life.

Less than five years later, she is a sought-after speaker and prominent activist for gender equality. Abby will share her story of two transitions, with a focus on gender and Jewish identity.
